About Us
_Love us or hate us, Australia’s football media has been as much a part of the fabric of the game as the players, coaches, staff, volunteers and myriad others who have contributed to the development of football over many years. It is the eyes and ears of the fans and has
an important role to play as the code in this country strives to continually break down the barriers that have held it back as a mainstream sport for too long.
With this in mind, the Football Media Association of Australia was established in 2008, founded jointly by Michael Cockerill (Sydney Morning Herald) and Ray Gatt (The Australian) with the support of Murray Shaw (FOX Sports) and Ezequiel Trumper (Radio Austral).
FMA recognises and appreciates the contribution of the former ASPA (Australian Soccer Press Association) body. ASPA passed all retained funds to the FMA allowing the FMA to set up the necessary incorporation structures in the early months of formation.
Our charter is to act as a united voice for the many people who are devoting, or have devoted, their time and effort to help promote Australian football at all levels.
We are also determined to help provide knowledge, understanding and encouragement to those who want a career in football journalism, reporting or media. We acknowledge also the changing face of 'media' around the world, and the important role that online and/or informal media has played in Australia since its introduction, and our membership categories reflect the reality of working in the football media in a still developing market.
The FMA has had a humble beginning, but is moving towards becoming a significant voice in our game.
