News Limited ousts Fairfax ... just

The Football Media Association (FMA) held its first annual fundraising trivia competition in August, inspired by FMA founding member and long time Sydney Morning Herald journalist and FOX Sports commentator, Michael Cockerill.
Mike was covering the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when he felt unwell. Soon after returning home following the tournament, he learned of his MML diagnosis. After extensive treatment throughout the remainder of 2010 and 2011 under the care of A/Professor Joy Ho and the Apheresis Unit at RPA Hospital, Mike is well on the way to a successful recovery. He had a stem cell transplant in May, and is now back at work for the current A-League season.
Medical research institutes such as the Centenary Institute contribute to the body of knowledge around Australia and the world that helps advance medical science to improve treatment and, one day, lead to prevention and cure.
As an Institute associated with RPA where Mike was treated, and Sydney Medical School, the FMA Committee thought it appropriate to support Centenary Institue for our inaugural fundraising event.
A capacity crowd participated in the trivia night held at The Grandstand Bar at Sydney University with 15 teams vying for honours. Fittingly, the contest was a tie between Fairfax – led by Sports Editor, Ian Fuge - and News Limited – led by Ray Gatt from The Australian & FMA executive committee member. After the regular rounds of questions, the two teams were tied and it took a dramatic, relevant and amusing tie-breaker 'Who am I?' question to separate the two. It came down to the final and 5th clue for News Limited to just pip out their rivals.
The fundraiser contributed around $6,500 to the Centenary Institute through a combination of entry fees and auction. See some photos from the night in our Gallery.
Thanks to SBS, Giles Park (Photographer), The Point Coolum Beach, Barilla Pasta, Tim Cahill and Everton Football Club and Sydney Football Club for the major auction prizes.
